You reap what you sow! Our thoughts and actions influence the course and outcome of our lives. The law of attraction (LoA) shows how not only targeted action but also focused thinking is required for achieving goals and living a fruitful life.

Background

You wished for something and took various avenues to make sure it happens and it didn’t. You are actively searching for love and you put yourself out there but no one shows up. Then, out of the blue the universe delivers. When you least expect opportunities come knocking and you are asked out on a date. This is a paradox of our reality where we get something when we stop wanting it.

Law of attraction explains that we “…attract into our lives whatever we are focusing on” since we all are subject to the universe’s laws. Using the power of mind we can materialize thoughts and wishes into reality. In basic terms, all thoughts turn into things eventually. A strongly related concept is that of karma which suggests that what you give out to the world will ultimately return to your own life.  

LoA is a concept promoted by New Thought philosophy. It reached popularity through the release of  “The Secret” movie, followed by a book with the same name written by Rhonda Byrne. Supporters of this law claim that it has scientific backup and it boasts with a large audience, famous personalities vouching for it and connection with religious and psychological concepts. How to attract?

If you’re like me, positive and optimistic thinking does not come naturally. You have to make a conscious effort to alter your perceptions and thoughts. This is where the “act as if…” method comes into play. This is a tool within the law of attraction toolkit that allows you to attract and model success. To “act as if…” means to behave, think and feel as if you already know how do something, are who you want and have what you want.

“Act as if! Act as if you’re a wealthy man, rich already, and then you’ll surely become rich. Act as if you have unmatched confidence and then people will surely have confidence in you. Act as if you have unmatched experience and then people will follow your advice. And act as if you are already a tremendous success, and as sure as I stand here today – you will become successful.” – Jordan Belfort, Wolf of Wall Street

The law of attraction community suggests manifestation as key to achieving: 

  1. Keep a dream journal or create a vision board: physically write or draw your dreams/goals
  2. Visualize: take time to imagine and act positive actions, thoughts and behaviours.
  3. Practice imaginative manifestation: develop the creative skill of manifestation by creating physical images within your mind. Start with small, easy objects and grow from there.

So, our thoughts are of paramount importance: they send out vibrational energies that interact with the universe’s and it will contribute to materializing our desires and life’s goals.

Or NOT…? Reality check

As you probably guessed, the law of attraction idea is largely debatable. This article questions the claim that thoughts can directly alter reality. LoA initiators say thoughts are sending out magnetic signals which rearrange the reality and attract what you’re thinking back to you. Supporters say this can be proved through science. Moreover the article revokes ideas of the book “The Secret” such as controlling your body weight. The book’s author says “ It is your thought that food is responsible for putting on weight that actually has food put on weight”. Do you agree?

The LoA website published six scientific “factsthat support the belief in LoA. They mention scientific research being done and proving some of LoA principles, however there are no references or external links to back this up. 

Final thoughts

Whether science proven or not, law of attraction can be implemented as a tool towards a more meaningful existence. Thinking positively and believing in yourself is bound to support you achieve goals. As with every philosophical and spiritual concept LoA should not be followed and applied mot-a-mot and blindly but rather adapted to personal circumstances. DO NOT  think that imagining something is enough. Adapt the tools to match your type of success. Purposeful action and hard work is required.
