Widening Horizons – A training for organisations hosting or sending volunteers.

This training aims to support organisations hosting and sending volunteers through Erasmus+ / European Solidarity Corp to gain a fuller appreciation of how to maximise the transformative learning experience for each volunteer.

The training will explore the concept of transformative learning and how volunteering can transform our understanding of ourselves; our belief systems; and influence our behaviour/lifestyle choices.

Volunteering offers vital support to people in need, worthwhile causes and the community. However the benefits of volunteering can be as important to the volunteer. It is now recognized that volunteering can reduce stress, combat depression, provide an opportunity to be mentally and physically stimulated and provide a sense of purpose. Dedicating time to volunteering can help expand social networks and boost social skills. It can also present opportunities to develop important skills used in the workplace, such as, teamwork, communication skills, problem solving, project planning, task management and organisation. The benefits of volunteering are often underdeveloped and not maximized during or after a volunteering experience under Erasmus+. This training will support participants to develop these aspects of their own projects.

Overall objectives of this training:

– To explore the concept of Transformational Learning (Psychological; Convictional; Behavioural)

– To build a bigger picture of the benefits of volunteering

– To explore these benefits focusing on, personal development, youth mental health and wellbeing

– To look at tools, methods and structures that we can implement within E+/ESC projects to maximise the potential for transformational learning

This training will also provide the opportunity for meeting potential project partners and sharing best practice.
