Local Youth Councils at International Scale

With this 2-days conference, we would like to launch the international exchange of experiences and perspectives on the quality of local youth councils at a broad, international and intercontinental level.

About the conference

With this conference, we would like to launch the international exchange of experiences and perspectives on the quality of local youth councils at a broad, international and intercontinental level. It brings together various stakeholders in the youth field, such as non-governmental organisations, municipality representatives, researchers, youth workers and youth leaders, to discuss the importance of youth participation at the local level across the participating countries and continents. The participants of the conference will have the opportunity to discuss and share ideas, experiences and best practices for involving young people in decision-making processes, thus giving them a voice and active role in their local communities.

The conference is also a launching moment for the LOCAL YOUTH COUNCILS AT INTERNATIONAL SCALE – a 2-years project financed by the European Union, with plenty of exciting experiences, training and outcomes yet to come.

The conference takes place on the 6th and 7th July, 10:30-14:00 CEST ONLINE. Participation in both days is not required,

DAY 1 (6th July, 10:30-14:00 CEST):

  • current policy framework on the youth participation in decision-making processes
  • country perspectives on local youth councils and their alternatives from Italy, North Macedonia, Portugal, Palestine and Tunisia
  • project “Local Youth Councils at International Scale”, which for the next 2 years aims to bring quality and training to these participatory spaces

DAY 2 (6th July, 10:30-14:00 CEST):

  • young people’s perspective on local youth councils, their strong and weak points
  • various international projects and their outcomes focusing on local youth councils

Apart from these, we planned several moments of ideation, networking, and exchange of experiences in the breakout rooms with other participants interested in the area of local youth councils.

About the project

Starting from the idea that young people are the driving force of society, able to influence decision-making processes and shape the future of their reality from the local to the global level, this project aims to foster the potential of young people to be active citizens and actors of fundamental social change in their local communities.

The project focuses on the quality of youth work at the international level in terms of analysing and increasing the capacities and possibilities of youth workers from civil society organisations and municipalities to engage young people in decision-making processes at the local level through local youth councils and equipping young people with the skills and competencies for quality  participation.

The project has been launched in May 2022 and connects experiences of the countries from the Mediterranean region, namely Italy, North Macedonia, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal and Tunisia. It is financed from the Capacity-Building in the Field of Youth Erasmus+ Programme.
